The Distributed and Parallel Systems (DPS) group of the University of Innsbruck Computer Science Institute has a vast experience in parallel processing, Grid technology and computer networks. One research focus of the group is on simplifying the effective use of multiprocessor architectures and geographically distributed heterogeneous resources (Grid), which will provide the basis for the next generation of Internet-enabled performance-oriented applications. In this context, topics such as programming environments and tools, programming paradigms and methods, intelligent scheduling and performance analysis are covered. Another focus is computer networks, where the group concentrates on tailoring network technology to work in diverse scenarios (across high-speed links or noisy links, in mobile environments, etc.) and support heterogeneous applications (streaming media, signalling traffic, the Grid, etc.). This naturally leads to research on congestion control and Quality of Service (QoS) as well as cross-layer issues (adaptive multimedia, etc.) and network measurements. These topics are under investigation of a special team devoted to the subject "Network Support for Grid Computing (NSG)", which is the binding element between the different research areas within the group. The group members have been involved both as participant and leader of numerous EU funded and locally funded projects, and contributed to OGF as well as IETF standards
